Seeking Will, Rapua a Will
Reviews
Seeking Will | Rapua a Will is another beautifully crafted pukapuka for 3-8 year olds from the talented team behind Finding Grace | Kimihia a Grace - author Emma Hinton, illustrator Nicky Hartley, translator Hēmi Kelly, and the many creative tamariki who contributed to the artwork.
This story follows Will and his determined companion, his dog Seek, as they embark on an outdoor adventure. When a powerful and disorienting storm strikes, the pair become separated. Alone, Will must draw upon his inner confidence and resilience to find his way back to his friend, restoring their connection before continuing their journey of discovery.
The storm Will encounters will feel familiar to many in Aotearoa, but it also serves as a powerful metaphor for moments in life when we feel lost, uncertain, or alone. The narrative opens meaningful opportunities for discussion around emotional resilience, perseverance, and regaining balance in challenging situations. Each line invites reflection, and the excellent teaching notes enable deeper engagement and the development of emotional literacy.
Hinton’s portrayal of Will’s emotional experience is particularly effective. Descriptions such as “breath and body heavy” vividly capture the physical weight of worry and determination, sensations that young readers will readily recognise. Hartley’s illustrations are equally compelling, rich with expression and emotion, bringing depth and vitality to the story.
An accompanying activity, Storm Circles: Three Activations for Mapping, Making & Becoming, further enhances the book’s impact. It encourages readers to “slow down, notice, make, and discover what wants to emerge,” echoing the reflective and exploratory spirit of the story. It encapsulates the essence of the series: evocative storytelling, striking visuals, and thoughtful engagement with the emotional landscape of childhood.
This is a meaningful and resonant addition to the series, and I eagerly anticipate the release of the third book.
